Anti-wrinkle injections, also known as Botulinum Toxin, work by minimising targeted muscle movements beneath the skins surface which are responsible for causing lines and wrinkles.
How does it work?
Botulinum toxin blocks the transmission of chemical signals from nerves reaching target muscles. Without a signal, muscles remain in a resting state and hense facial expressions remain relaxed. This in turn prevents or softenes the appearence of lines/wrinkles on the skin. Botulinum toxin therefore mainly targets lines of facial expression (dynamic lines). Lines which are present on the face at rest (static lines) will generally not disappear with botulinum toxin, however it will help to smooth and reduce their appearance. It is not always desirable to stop all movement, as a completely frozen look may not be aesthetically pleasing. Your expectations and desired outcome will be discussed during your consultation prior to treatment. As well as being used to treat lines and wrinkles, botulinum toxin can also be used for other purposes, including treatment of excessive underarm sweating (hyperhydrosis), gummy smile reduction and jawline contouring.
Is it painful?
How long do the results last?
The treatment is carried out using a fine needle, similar to the size used on an insulin pen. It is generally not very painful and most people will only experience minor discomfort. Some patients describe the sensation similar to plucking an eyebrow.
